Rubber monoculture not only eliminates indigenous traditional land-use systems, but also reduces agricultural biodiversity and affects pollination services for other crops. According to a 2012 study, rubber plantation development has also invaded the habitat of Asian elephants and white-cheeked gibbons.

Rubber plantations have also changed the local habitat. In terms of water resources, rubber processing requires the use of strong alkaline acids, which penetrate into the ground, water and air, affecting the sustainable use of local water resources, causing soil erosion and pollution of water resources, and deteriorating the quality of life of residents. In the long run, rubber monoculture may result in the breakdown of local ecosystem services related to water resources.

SURUMER aims to provide knowledge and decision bases for sustainable land management and forward-looking regional land use action strategies and tools for global climate change adaptation. Partner countries in the project include China, Thailand and Laos, and the study area is mainly rubber plantations in the upper Mekong River.

Sustainable land use includes issues such as carbon dynamics of land use, water balance, water resources management, pollination services, agro-biodiversity, human-wildlife conflicts, economic assessment and knowledge transfer management.
