Scientists at the Belarusian National Academy of Sciences have announced a new scientific result, which is the first in the world to breed potatoes that can kill pests automatically.

According to the Russian Interfax news agency reported on August 7, so far, a kind of pest called potato beetle is the biggest headache for farmers, because they destroy a large number of potato fields every year and bring huge economic losses to agriculture. Belarusian scientists have recently developed a new type of genetically modified potato that can specifically poison the beetle.

A scientist involved in the study said that after experiments, they have successfully transplanted a special gene into potatoes that continues to produce a toxin that is deadly to potato beetles (the toxin is harmless to humans). Therefore, when the potato beetle begins to destroy the stems and leaves of the potato, the toxin will soon seep into the worm and poison it to death.

At present, the Belarusian National Academy of Sciences is experimenting with this new type of potato in the field. If all goes well, Belarus will take the lead in popularizing the genetically modified potato on a large scale in the world.
