Breast edema is a perinatal metabolic disorder in dairy cows. The symptoms are edema of the whole or part of the cow's breast, the skin is shiny, painless, like dough, sunken when pressing the breast with the fingers, the nipple becomes thick and short because of edema, it is difficult to milking, and when the disease is more serious, the cow's breasts droop, causing the hind limbs to open and stand, difficult to move and easy to cause injury. Cow breast edema will lead to a decline in milk production and breast atrophy.

Causes: obstruction of lymphatic reflux, increase of permeability, enhancement of endocrine function of dairy cows, excessive feeding of high concentrate before delivery, imbalance of mineral proportion, abnormal antioxidant function and disorder of endotoxin metabolism.

Prevention: first, strictly control the concentrate feeding of dairy cows, generally controlled at 4-6 kg per day before parturition. Second, limit the use of salt, which generally accounts for 1% of the total price of the diet. Third, the concentrate should be nutritionally balanced, and it is best to use pre-partum materials.

Treatment: give the cow breast massage, 3 times a day, 15-30 minutes each time, hot compress the breast after massage. Furosemide can also be injected intramuscularly (furosemide) with a dosage of 200 mg each time, twice in a row. You can also use 25% glucose solution 500 ml, 10% calcium gluconate solution 500 ml or 5% calcium chloride solution 250 ml, 10% sodium coffee 30 ml, intravenous injection for 3 days. Plantain can also be used to feed cows.
