Last Updated: 2024/11/22, Dog third eyelid polyp is also known as "cherry eye". Due to glandular hypertrophy and other reasons, inflammation occurs when the nictitating membrane is flipped from the inside to the outside of the eye, which increases eye secretions and presents symptoms of conjunctivitis. Hypertrophy of superficial nictitating membrane glands is common in clinic. it can occur in one or both eyes. It is a common eye disease in pet surgery. The routine treatment with eye drops, eye ointment and antibiotics often has no effect. The effect of surgical resection is satisfactory and there is no recurrence. In clinical work, surgical resection was performed in more than 20 cases of the disease.

In clinical work, more than 20 cases of the disease were cured by surgical resection, and the effect is remarkable. The surgical methods are briefly introduced as follows.

1 etiology

It is mainly due to the rich distribution of nictitating membrane blood flow, glandular excess secretion, secondary cellulitis, hypoplasia of glandular attachment ligament or third eyelid glandular cartilage defect, which may be related to heredity.

2 symptoms

Secrete serous or sticky eye stool, the inner corner of the eye exposed abnormal nictitating membrane, due to long-term exposure, glands hyperemia, swelling, tears overflow, its protruding is dark red burst. In dogs with severe nictitating membrane hypertrophy, the whole nictitating membrane is red and hypertrophic, and the exposed nictitating membrane covers a part of the eyeball, accompanied by disturbance of eye movement and difficulty in vision.

3 methods of treatment

The drug treatment of this disease is ineffective and can only be resected by operation.

3.1 Surgical instruments small curved hemostatic forceps, tweezers, scalpels or curved scissors, cotton balls, eye drops, epinephrine, anesthetic 846 mixture.

3.2Anesthesia was performed by 0.1mL/kg intramuscular injection. Fasting for 12 hours before operation, because most of the diseased dogs will have allergic reactions such as vomiting after intramuscular injection of 846, and the affected dogs will exhale tongue and breathe slowly after intramuscular injection of 15min. At this time, they have entered a state of anesthesia and can be operated.

To prevent postoperative infection, clamp it at the base of the protruding object with small curved hemostatic forceps, remove it, and then press it for a period of time, about 5min. If there is bleeding, press the wound with epinephrine cotton ball to stop bleeding, or drop 0.1% adrenaline solution into the incision for 2 drops. Then gently open the hemostatic forceps, postoperative eyes should be smeared with antibiotics eye drops or eye ointment, 2 or 3 times a day for a week. Nursing should be done well after operation to prevent scratching and grinding. In order to prevent infection, antibiotics can be injected intramuscularly after operation and can be cured about 5 days after operation.
