In order to maintain the exuberant growth of the tea tree, maintain the good population structure of the crown for a long time, facilitate the operation and management, and prolong the high yield life of the tea tree, it must be regulated by annual pruning in addition to strengthening the fertilizer management.

The main purpose is to flatten the tree crown, to make the germination position relatively consistent, to adjust the number and weight of buds, to control the tree height, to stimulate the germination of round tea, and to improve the quality of fresh leaves. The depth of light pruning should be determined according to tea variety, tree age, climatic conditions, management level of tea garden and tree potential. If the tree is strong, the pruning should be shallow, as long as it is 3 cm and 5 cm. If the tree is weaker, the pruning is heavier, and it is appropriate to cut off 5 cm and 10 cm. Heavy pruning can significantly increase the weight of single bud, but the density of bud decreases, while light pruning is beneficial to increase germination density. Pruning should be grasped flexibly according to the specific conditions of tea garden. Light pruning can be carried out every year in late autumn and early winter (November-December), or every other year. For example, in order to make early spring tea and pick more spring tea in high and cold mountain areas, light pruning had better be postponed to late spring and early summer (late May). The arc shape of the trimmed tea tree is better, which can increase the germination surface and picking surface. The pruning tools are all hedgerow shears (produced in Hangzhou and Sichuan), and electric pruning machines can also be used where possible (Japanese parts, assembled in Hangzhou).
