Etiology, diagnosis, prevention and treatment of small intestinal obstruction in dogs

Small intestinal obstruction is a kind of acute abdomen in dogs, which is often caused by mechanical obstruction of the intestinal cavity or irreversible changes in the normal position of the small intestine, such as intussusception, incarceration, torsion and so on. Small intestinal obstruction not only causes intestinal obstruction, but also accompanied by local blood circulation disturbance.

The cause of the disease is to eat bones, nuts and elastic toys. Intestinal parasites such as Ascaris lumbricoides, Taenia solium and intestinal obstruction caused by Ascaris lumbricoides are the main causes. Initial symptoms: do not eat, yell, vomit, roll on the ground from time to time. Sometimes there is a small amount of feces. With the development of the disease, there were persistent vomiting, severe dehydration, sunken eyeball, decreased skin elasticity, enlarged abdominal circumference and dyspnea. With the disturbance of local blood circulation of the intestinal tract, the intestinal tract of the diseased site began to paralyze and necrosis, and the pain reaction of the diseased dog disappeared. However, clinical symptoms such as high mental depression, autologous poisoning, shock and so on will result in death if not treated in time.

The symptoms of chronic intestinal obstruction mainly show that the animals gradually lose weight, dehydration, and have a history of long-term treatment.

[diagnosis] A preliminary diagnosis can be made according to medical history and clinical symptoms. Abdominal palpation can touch an obvious obstruction mass or the thick and thin junction of intussusception. Such as high abdominal tension, affect palpation, can be injected with a small dose of sedative, muscle relaxant, such as 846 compound anesthetic or chlorpromazine. Palpation is performed after the animals are quiet.

X-ray examination can be applied where there are conditions, and it can be seen that the front end of the blocking part is inflated. A layered image of the intestine can be seen in the intussusception.

[treatment] when small intestinal obstruction is diagnosed, surgical treatment should be performed immediately. The earlier the operation time, the higher the cure rate. Other symptomatic treatments such as supplementation of energy and fluid, adjustment of acid-base balance therapy and systemic application of antibiotics to control infection should be adopted before and after operation. After fasting for 5-6 days, intravenous infusion was used to maintain the normal metabolism of the body, and then liquid diet was given until the routine diet was restored. Nursing care of sick dogs was strengthened after operation.
