Last Updated: 2024/09/19, On May 14, 2008, Bayer crop Science announced the launch of the world's first hybrid rice variety ArizeRDhani resistant to rice bacterial blight in India. This new variety can increase yield by 20% to 30% compared with conventional varieties, and provides strong protection for crops from the highly destructive bacterial leaf blight. Rice is a staple food for many developing countries and emerging markets. Despite the growing global demand for this crop, the occurrence of diseases will greatly affect the harvest and threaten the food supply.

On May 14, 2008, Bayer CropScience announced the launch of Arize RDhani, the world's first hybrid rice variety resistant to rice bacterial blight, in India. The new variety increases yields by 20 to 30 percent over conventional varieties and provides strong protection against the devastating bacterial blight.

"Rice is a staple food in many developing countries and emerging markets. Despite the growing global demand for this crop, the occurrence of diseases can significantly affect harvests and threaten food supplies,"said Professor Friedrich Berschauer, Global President of Bayer CropScience. Arize RDhani is a key milestone in our development of new high-yielding, disease-resistant rice varieties."

Rice bacterial blight is a common disease caused by Xanthomonas oryzae affecting rice production worldwide, resulting in up to 60% rice yield reduction in India. In this case, hybrid rice varieties

Arize RDhani plays an important role in increasing rice productivity and thus ensuring sustainable supply of this priority food crop.

"Hybrid rice is an important crop for Bayer CropScience," said Frederic Arboucalot, Global Rice Manager and Head of Biosciences Asia Pacific. Bayer CropScience sells seven rice varieties in India. India is a developing country, with rice production of 128 million tons making it the second largest rice producer after China. "Nevertheless, India's productivity is much lower than China's, ranking only 16th in the world," Arboucalot stressed."New plant protection products and seeds that can increase yield are the future development priorities to increase productivity and produce enough food."

Bayer CropScience is a global leader in hybrid rice development. ArizeR, a high-quality seed variety, has minimal impurities and germinates easily, while increasing yield more than conventional rice varieties.

ArizeR was launched in six major Asian countries (India, Philippines, Indonesia, Vietnam, Bangladesh and Pakistan) and Brazil in 2007.
