Swine salt poisoning

As salt has the effect of boosting appetite, some illegal traders often add excessive salt to their feed before selling piglets to increase their weight and make huge profits, which will lead to poisoning, so farmers should pay attention to buying piglets to prevent them from being fooled.

Sodium is one of the essential elements for animals. 0.3-0.5% salt is usually added to the feed to meet the needs of pigs. When pigs are deficient due to sweating, vomiting, diarrhea, urination, etc., they should be replenished in time, otherwise they will grow slowly. Pica (such as eating fecal urine, licking hair, arch wall, arch soil, etc.), but if you eat too much and do not drink enough water, there will be symptoms of poisoning. Poisoning is usually caused by the following reasons: in rural areas, there are surplus pickles, brine and other foods that contain too much salt, which are reluctant to be discarded and will be mixed with feed to feed pigs at one time. There are pigs usually less salt supplement, once there is salt, there will be a fierce eating phenomenon, which will lead to salt poisoning.

The experiment shows that when drinking water is adequate, feeding feed with a salt content of up to 10% will not cause salt poisoning, because excessive salt is quickly excreted with urine, and pigs should have an adequate supply of clean drinking water.

Treatment: at present, there is no good way, when pigs are poisoned, do not supplement water supply, which will accelerate their death. Reduce blood pressure with 25% sorbitol or 20% mannitol, sedate with chlorpromazine and tribromine, and take oral diuretic (dihydrochlorothiazide) AgSO4 (catharsis) to relieve symptoms.
