Hainan has successfully bred glutinous rice with high yield and good quality.
Hainan Academy of Agricultural Sciences has successfully bred a glutinous rice "Haifengnuo No. 1" with better quality than Li traditional mountain orchid rice. This variety has the advantages of high yield, disease resistance, cold tolerance, lodging resistance and good waxy. The average yield per mu is 4 times that of Shanlan rice.
Mountain orchid rice, also known as "mountain blocking rice", refers to a kind of dry glutinous rice planted by Hainan Li compatriots who cut down a piece of open land on the mountain, which is suitable for making wine. Shanlan wine is called the champagne of the Li nationality. Therefore, Shanlan rice is the favorite traditional crop of the Li nationality.
According to a person in charge of the Food and crop Research Institute of the Hainan Academy of Agricultural Sciences, due to the long-term cultivation of mountain orchid rice in central Hainan, it not only destroys the ecological environment, but also produces very low yield, with only more than 100 kilograms per mu of mountain orchid rice. In order to not only protect the ecological environment, but also meet the needs of farmers for planting glutinous rice to make wine and produce characteristic food, Hainan Academy of Agricultural Sciences has devoted itself to breeding high-quality glutinous rice which can replace mountain orchid rice since 2003.
Through several years of breeding and trial planting, "Haifengnuo No. 1" has the advantages of high yield, strong disease resistance, good cold tolerance and good lodging resistance. its waxy property is much higher than that of Shanlan rice, the average yield per mu can reach 450 kg, and the yield is 4 times that of Shanlan rice.
In addition, the growth period of "Haifengnuo No. 1" is relatively short, and it can be planted twice a year in Hainan, early sowing in December, maturing in about 145 days, and sowing in late July, which can be harvested in about 117 days, which is very suitable for popularization and planting in the mountainous areas of central Hainan.
At present, the Grain crops Research Institute of Hainan Academy of Agricultural Sciences has demonstrated and popularized planting of 500 mu in Wuzhishan, Baisha, Changjiang and other cities and counties. "Haifengnuo No. 1" has recently been approved by Hainan Provincial crop Variety Committee.
