Glutinous rice is an annual tufted herb, up to 1 meter high, with erect culms, glabrous. Leaf blade flattened, linear-lanceolate, slightly scabrous, 30 cm long and 6 mm wide; ligule membranous, long and conspicuous. Panicle scattered, 15-30 cm long; branches many, long and ascending; spikelets oblong, 6-8 mm long, compressed on both sides, ridged, pilose, Awned or Awned; glumes extremely reduced, semilunar marks at tip of spikelet stalk; Lemma of sterile floret subequal, lanceolate, ca. 1 bank 4-1-3 as long as spikelet, Palea reduced; Palea of stout floret similar to Lemma, with 6 stamens; style short.
