Last Updated: 2024/11/08, Before taking your mink home, you should prepare the following things in advance: food-eating high-quality dried mink food will make the mink thrive. If you can't find dry food for the mink, you can use high-quality kitten feed instead. But cats and minks need different nutrients, so kitten food or adult cat food can not fully meet the diet needs of mink rats. The nutritional composition of dog food is not close to the nutrition that minks want to absorb. See if the composition analysis on the package meets the basic requirements of minks. The main food of mink should be fat.

Before you bring your mink home, prepare the following:

Food-Eating high quality dry mink food will make minks thrive. If you can't find dry mink food, you can replace it with good cat food. However, cats and minks need different nutrients, so cat food or cat food can't completely meet mink's dietary requirements. The nutritional composition of dog food is not close to the nutrition that mink should absorb. Look at the composition analysis on the packaging bag. It does not meet the basic requirements of mink. The mink's main diet should consist of fat and protein, especially animal protein, because their digestive circulation is very short, if they only absorb vegetable protein, it is not enough nutrition. Chicken, turkey, beef and lamb can all be fed to them. Most minks don't like fish, and eating fish makes their droppings stink worse. Mink food should contain 30-35% protein and 15-20% fat. Most plants cannot be absorbed by the mink digestive system. Feeding mink plants can lead to bladder stones, so make sure there are no plants in the feed.

Cage-is to give the animal a protected and reassuring place, at night or when no one is watching it, it is best to keep it in a cage, this can ensure that it will not be hurt. Your mink will see its cage as a safe place, and if it is given enough time to play outside, it will not hate being caged. When you let him out to play, make sure the cage door is open, so he can enter the cage to eat food, thirst, go to the toilet and sleep. (Although they prefer to sleep in drawers, behind refrigerators, under mattresses, under the TV, or somewhere we can't see).

The cage should be large enough for the mink to stretch and play, although it spends most of its time sleeping. The cage should have room for a bedpan, feed basin and water bottle, and a place to sleep. A cage about 90cm wide, 90cm deep and 60cm high can accommodate one or two minks comfortably.

Multi-tiered cages give minks more room to move around and save you space, but make sure there are no traps in the cage for minks to fall from heights. The bottom of the cage should be flat and padded.

The iron wire at the bottom of the cage can hurt their fragile feet. You can lay carpet on the wire. To prevent the carpet from moving out of place, you can punch small holes in the corners of the carpet and tie the carpet and wire tightly together. At the bottom of the cage can be woven cloth, cloth soft and easy to wash, and the price is cheap, rotten it can be thrown away. Small pieces of carpet or sweaters can give minks a soft place to sleep, or they can sleep in sweaters. Check his nails for cracks or excessive length, which can trap hair debris in them. Do not use sawdust or shredded newspaper as bedding for them. These materials can be breeding grounds for bacteria. If you use cloth as bedding or on floors, check periodically to see if minks eat the cloth. Did the pieces fall apart? The long loose wires sometimes entangle the mink, possibly injuring or even killing it. Washing shredded bedding at least once a week will slightly reduce mink odor. Cages made of metal are a good option, you can make your own or buy them. Don't raise your mink in an aquarium, because aquariums can starve the air and allow the mink to breathe in bacteria-laden air. One problem with most plastic transport cages is lack of air circulation. These transport cages are only good for transporting your mink to the vet or taking it to visit friends. Most plastic transport cages are not recommended for minks.

Remember, you can't keep a mink in a cage for too long. It has to play outside the cage and build a relationship with its owner. A mink should spend four hours a day playing outside its cage (longer would be better) and would love to play with you.

Feed basin and drinking fountain-always supply plenty of dry feed and fresh water to minks. Minks take about 3-4 hours to digest food, so replenish food from time to time to maintain the digestive system. Minks often knock over their feed pans, and to prevent them from knocking over their feed pans, it is best to use a heavy, flat bowl. Using drinking fountains can prevent leaks and keep the water clean. But clean water should still be changed daily and cleaned regularly, and fresh feed and water should always be provided.

Potty-can be used with ordinary cat potty. But sometimes you can use a small rubber plate, one side can be cut to 1-2 inches high, such a potty will work better, and cheaper. If your mink isn't a mink who likes to dig and play with toilet mats, it's easier to dispose of it with a regular cat potty. If your mink thinks it's sand and plays in it, congealing toilet bedding is not recommended. Common dust-free bedding, eco-friendly bedding, or similar bedding can be used for minks. Some people use wood bedding made from compressed sawdust, which can be a cheaper and more effective toilet mat.

Vitamins-If you're feeding him high-quality mink feed, don't take extra vitamins. These vitamin supplements are great for training minks. Minks usually love to eat (if they refuse to eat the first time you give them, you can put some on your finger and smear it on their mouth). These vitamin supplements contain a lot of vitamin A, so it is best to dilute these vitamins and reduce their intake. It can be diluted with olive oil; one part of vitamin is diluted with two (or a little more) parts of olive oil. Don't give him more than half a teaspoon of diluted vitamins a day.
