Dogs have reached sexual maturity before 1 year old, showing estrus (commonly known as "naughty dog"), but the time of physical maturity varies according to the breed of dog. Generally speaking, small dogs mature earlier than large dogs. For Beijing dogs, Xishi dogs and other small dogs, it is appropriate to breed and conceive in the second estrus (about 12-14 months old), while Great Dane dogs and black shellfish dogs are better after 18 months of age, because they have reached maturity at this time.

The highest pregnancy rate occurs on the eleventh to thirteenth day of the bitch's estrus. After conception, the bitch gave birth after 64 ±4 days of pregnancy, and the lactation period was about 45 days after delivery. The average litter size per litter is 4-6, which varies from breed to breed.

Dystocia mainly occurs in the following situations: the fetus is large, especially when only one fetus is pregnant; when the bitch is not mature, the pelvic mouth is narrow; the bitch is mainly carnivorous, and the bone development is poor; the fetal position is not correct; the bitch's physique is weak, uterine contraction is weak; not to the normal delivery time, preterm delivery by external stimulation, and so on. Sometimes, the female dog of the small dog is too small, and the male dog is too large, which is also one of the factors causing dystocia. 7-14 days after delivery, the puppies opened their eyes. Puppies find their nipples by their sense of smell, while bitches identify their puppies by their anger. Seven days after delivery, the growth and development of puppies enter a rapid period, which is easy to cause or aggravate the postpartum calcium deficiency of bitches, such as wheezing, high fever (about 40 ℃) and convulsions, which should be supplemented in time.
