Last Updated: 2024/11/05, In recent years, single-headed garlic is favored by consumers because of its round shape and convenient consumption, and the market situation is very good. But usually planting garlic is to reduce the occurrence of single-headed garlic as far as possible, so it is difficult to produce high-quality and high-yield single-headed garlic. According to vegetable expert Chang Wei, production practice has proved that sowing too late is the main reason for the production of single-headed garlic. In addition, precocious varieties, small cloves of garlic, poor soil, insufficient base fertilizer, drought and lack of water, serious grass famine, excessive density, too few leaves, temperature and light conditions for scale bud differentiation can not be met.

In recent years, single-headed garlic is favored by consumers because of its round shape and convenient consumption, and the market situation is very good. In addition, early-maturing varieties, small cloves of garlic, poor soil, insufficient base fertilizer, drought and lack of water, serious grass shortage, excessive density, too few leaves, unmet temperature and light conditions for scale bud differentiation can all lead to the production of single garlic. Therefore, these factors can be skillfully used to cultivate single-headed garlic.

Prepare the land to make a bed

Choose sandy loam or light loam, avoid continuous cropping. After the former crop harvest, 250 kg of rotten circle fertilizer and 50 kg of superphosphate were applied per mu as base fertilizer. After shallow ploughing and raking, it is made into a flat bed about 1.4 meters wide.

Selection of growing garlic

The seed cloves used in the production of single garlic must be small cloves, so they are generally selected from garlic varieties with more cloves and smaller cloves. However, there are significant differences in the percentage and weight of single-headed garlic with different varieties of garlic, which affects the yield and quality of single-headed garlic. Therefore, before engaged in the production of single-headed garlic, the variety comparison test should be carried out to select the varieties with high single head rate and high single head weight which are suitable to be planted locally. It is understood that the head rate of early-maturing garlic varieties such as Ershui early and Wenjiang red seven-star garlic is relatively high, up to 76.92%.

The size of seed cloves for the production of single-headed garlic is related to the yield and quality of single-headed garlic. The garlic cloves of suitable size are selected to grow garlic in order to obtain high single head rate and moderate size single garlic. If the seed clove is too large, it will produce 2-3 cloves of small garlic, so that the single head rate is reduced; if the seed clove is too small, the single garlic produced is too small and loses commercial value. It is generally required that the weight of a single head of garlic can reach 5 to 8 grams. In order to produce garlic with high single head rate and suitable size, it is necessary to carry out experiments on the relationship between valve size and single head rate and single head weight. Garlic cloves weighing less than 0.5 to 1.5 grams are generally used to grow garlic.

Sowing production

The suitable sowing time of single garlic can only be determined by local sowing experiment by stages. Sowing early, the vegetative growth period of garlic seedlings is long, accumulate more nutrients, easy to produce small garlic with 2-3 cloves; sowing late, single garlic is too small. Sowing in autumn is generally about 50-80 days later than that of garlic cultivation. The amount of seed used per mu is generally about 100 kg.

When sowing, first trench according to 15 cm row spacing, ditch depth of about 6 cm 8 cm, then sow seeds according to plant spacing 3 cm 4 cm, and then cover 3 cm soil. After sowing the whole border, spread radish seeds evenly, using about 0.5 kg per mu, rake the border surface and irrigate after sowing. The purpose of mixed sowing radish seeds is to make use of the characteristics of fast germination and emergence of radish to inhibit the growth of garlic seedlings and increase the rate of single head.

Field management

Radish seedlings are divided into different periods after emergence, keeping a distance of 6cm to 8cm. After the radish was harvested and put on the market in the early spring of the following year, the garlic field was managed by ploughing, weeding, topdressing, irrigation and so on. It is necessary to ensure an adequate supply of water during the expansion of garlic.

Timely harvest

In the autumn sowing area, the Beginning of Summer was harvested in time after the pseudostem softened and most of the lower leaves dried up in the following year. It usually weighs 300 kilograms per mu. Dry in the sun for 2-3 days after harvest to prevent mildew.
