Generally speaking, the geological environment of selenium deficiency causes selenium deficiency in human beings and animals, especially in the years with more autumn rain, the selenium in the surface soil is lost with Rain Water, mainly herbivores or omnivores, it is difficult to obtain enough selenium from plants, which leads to selenium deficiency. Selenium deficiency has obvious regionality.

The narrow areas from northeast to southwest of China are selenium-deficient areas, especially in the western part of Heilongjiang Province and Liangshan in Sichuan Province. The concentration of selenium in organs and tissues of selenium-deficient animals decreases, and liver necrosis can occur under actual production conditions, or occur at the same time as muscle dystrophy, mulberry heart, leukomyopathy, and all kinds of animals have different clinical manifestations. The common features are decreased productivity, reduced litter size, infertility, dyskinesia, mammalian placenta and so on. Attention should be paid to selenium supplement for raising animals in selenium-deficient areas.

Racoon dog is an omnivorous animal. Under the condition of artificial feeding, plant feed accounts for most of its diet. There are more plant feedstuffs in Heilongjiang Province, and plant feed is produced locally (in selenium-poor areas). Therefore, the diet must be properly filled with trace elements selenium and vitamin E.

clinical manifestation。

At the beginning of the disease, there are no obvious symptoms, often ignored, with the extension of time, dozens of days later, due to long-term lack of appetite or abstinence, mental depression, like lying, hind limb movement is not flexible. The waist and back are arched and it is difficult to walk. During forced exercise, the forelimbs kneel and the hind legs drag the ground and crawl forward, sometimes in a dog sitting position. Due to long-term malnutrition, the body weakens until exhaustion and death. The disease mostly occurs in the rapid growth period of young raccoon dogs, such as lack of trace element selenium in the diet during pregnancy, raccoon dogs will not suck milk (wooden tongue disease) and die after birth.

Autopsy changes. Skeletal muscle and myocardial degeneration, skeletal muscle dry, light color, turbid, rough section, depression, necrotic focus, yellowish or white, dorsal longissimus muscle, hip hind limb muscle performance is more obvious. The myocardial fat decreased, the color became lighter, turbid, lack of luster, the ventricle dilated, the heart wall became thin and soft. The young beast's tongue is white. Prevention and control measures: to feed full-price diet, self-feeding should pay attention to selenium and vitamin E, to prevent the occurrence of the disease. Treatment: first supplement selenium and prepare 0.1% sodium selenite solution with normal saline. Treatment dose below 5 months old: intramuscular injection of 1.1mg, oral 2.0mg; prevention dose: intramuscular injection of 1.0ml, oral administration of 1.5ml. At the same time of selenium supplement, each animal is injected daily with vitamin E solution of 5.0~10.0mg intramuscularly or subcutaneously, which will enhance the therapeutic effect. As the therapeutic amount of sodium selenite is very close to that of intoxication, the use of sodium selenite is particularly cautious. Sodium selenite-vitamin E injection sold in the market can also be used. When using it, you must follow the instructions, or calculate the dosage according to the content of sodium selenite and then use it each time, so as to avoid selenium poisoning. Chronic poisoning can be caused by long-term intake of selenium in 5~10mg/kg feed of various animals, which is characterized by emaciation, greed for blood, ankylosis of joints, removal of hooves (nails, claws), hair removal and affecting reproduction. Acute or subacute poisoning may occur after one intake of selenium in 500~1000mg/kg feed, light ones stumble blindly and severe ones die.
