The damage characteristics of the low instar larvae were in the heart leaves, and the jointing larvae of wheat and barley were harmful heart leaves, resulting in curling, dwarfing, withering or forming residual plants, and each larva harmed 3 plants. The larvae eat the first stem base and cause white ears. It is an important pest of wheat and barley in China.

The morphological characteristics of the adult are 5.9-7.9mm, wingspan 13.5mm, densely covered with coarse scales, long gray-yellow hairs on the top of the head, filamentous antennae, oblong and grayish brown forewings, gray-brown fine hairs on the outer margin, white sword-shaped spots along the anterior margin, and gray-white ciliates on the outer and posterior edges. The egg is 1mm long and oval in shape. The last instar larvae are 10.5-15.2mm in body length, slender tube-shaped, white in young instar and yellowish-white in later. There are black spots around the stomata of 8 segments of the forechest and abdomen, 1 black spot on the middle chest and 1 black spot on the posterior chest, and 4 small black spots on the back of the 10th abdominal segment. The pupa is 7-10mm long, spindle-shaped, initially yellowish white, and then yellowish brown.

The living habits of the first generation of Shandong and Hebei were overwintered by low-instar larvae in the heart leaves of wheat, and the damage began to occur after the wheat turned green in the following year. In mid-late May, the larvae matured and pupated in the flag leaf sheath of wheat, and a few pupated in the second leaf sheath. The pupal stage is about 20 days. Generally, from late May to early June, the adults of wheat enter the mature stage and begin to Eclosion. Adult Eclosion takes place in the morning on a sunny day, and the Eclosion period is about 10 days. The adults love to fly and are the most active from 11 to 12:00. The temperature is below 20 ℃ and stops active. After Eclosion, the adults spend the summer in eaves, walls and bark cracks and lay eggs in autumn.

Control methods: (1) during the adult Eclosion period, wrinkled objects such as sacks are hung 2-3m under the eaves, and then concentrated on the next morning after they are drilled. (2) in the first and middle of April, 2.5% trichlorfon powder or 1% 1605 powder was sprayed per 667m21.5-2kg when the larvae climbed out of the activity or transformed into plants. If necessary, spray 1000 times of 90% crystal trichlorfon or 1500 times of 80% dichlorvos EC and 1500-2000 times of phoxim EC.
