Recently, during the investigation of the provenance of Lei bamboo by the forestry department of Lin'an City, a piece of "strange bamboo" with curved bamboo pole was found on Lei Bamboo Mountain in Chongyang Village, Jincheng Street, which was later identified as a variety of Lei bamboo by Professor Fang Wei of the Bamboo Department of Zhejiang Forestry University.

Recently, accompanied by Jiang Changfu, the owner of the mountain, we made a field survey up the mountain, covering an area of about 10 mu, with more than 2000 plants. Most of the bamboo stems are in the shape of "S". The curvature of the new bamboo is more obvious than that of the mother bamboo, and the bamboo whip is also uneven. Curved bamboo is scattered uniaxially, with a height of 2-6 m, eyebrow circumference about 12 cm, thick up to 18 cm, Internode length 15-20 cm, rod ring tight, Internode prominent, bamboo sheath smooth, reddish brown, accompanied by dark black patches, thicker bamboo shoots, darker the color of bamboo shoots, and bamboo shoots are not much different from thundershoots, so they are named "Snake Lei Bamboo" (scientific name, Phyllostachysvarsp).

According to Jiang Changfu, the distribution of serpentine Lei bamboo is very limited, only the adjacent golden village Bajiao Mountain has an area of two or three mu. He transplanted 17 trees in the plum season in 1998, planted on his own mountain, and then expanded year by year. In 6 years, the new development area reached more than 10 mu. According to his observation, planting "serpentine thunder bamboo" has three major advantages: first, it shoots out early. Natural bamboo shoots shoot half a month earlier than Lei bamboo. This year, bamboo shoots are dug on January 22 and produce 30kg bamboo shoots for the first time. Second, the output is high. According to his estimation, the yield per mu is about 10% higher than that of Phyllostachys praecox, and the shoot is thicker, with the largest one reaching 3 kg this year. Third, can be watched, serpentine thunder bamboo pole-shaped bending, planted in the courtyard, such as dragon dance, very spectacular.

Snake-shaped Phyllostachys praecox grows bamboo shoots every year after the Spring Festival, with early shoot, high yield and high price, and it is considered to have a good future. Snake-shaped Phyllostachys praecox is a combination of edible and ornamental. Its appearance not only increases the species resources of Phyllostachys praecox in the city, but also enriches the connotation of Lin'an bamboo culture, which is worth popularizing.
