At the National Bonsai Evaluation Exhibition held in Shanghai in 1985, miniature bonsai was exhibited in almost all the participating provinces and cities. so far, miniature bonsai has become a recognized style in the bonsai industry in China. In recent years, ultra-miniature bonsai has appeared in some places, which is less than 5 cm in diameter and can be placed on the finger, so it is also called bonsai.

Although miniature bonsai is small in size and can fully reflect the beauty of bonsai art, it is difficult to express the poetic artistic connotation of bonsai.

Generally speaking, miniature bonsai is dominated by plant bonsai, supplemented by landscape bonsai. Due to the limitation of the miniature bonsai, the selected plant materials should be varieties with small leaves, thick stems and thin branches, easy to be domesticated into plants with short, dry and curved posture, slow growth, strong adaptability, strong sprouting ability and sprouting tolerance. The commonly used plants are five-needle pine, black pine, white pine, Luohan pine, rhododendron, camellia, ginkgo, mountain plant, Elaeagnus, June snow, begonia, crape myrtle, gardenia, elm leaf plum, yellow poplar, tiger thorn, Yingchun, southern sky bamboo, red maple, Tamarix, sparrow plum, small iron tree, fruit pomegranate, ivy, Lingxiao, small Phoenix tail bamboo and so on.
