Rotten tongue disease is a viral infectious disease, and its main transmission vectors are Aedes albopictus and Culex pipiens quinquefasciatus. Cattle and sheep are easily infected after being bitten.

Clinical symptoms

The initial body temperature of the diseased sheep rose to 42 ℃, lethargy, loss of appetite, unable to keep up with the group, runny nose, saliva, upper lip edema, swelling can spread to the whole face and ears, oral mucosa congestion, cyanosis. After fever, the oral cavity, especially lip, cheek, tongue mucosal epithelial erosion, ulcer occurs. Exudate blood from the ulcer surface, secondary infection causes mucosal epithelial necrosis, oral stench, purulent secretion in the nostrils, dyspnea, and sometimes inflammation may occur in the crown and leaves of the hoof, resulting in claudication. Constipation and diarrhea occur alternately, with bloody dysentery. The acute type has a course of 1 to 2 weeks, with a mortality rate of 30%, sometimes as high as 90%. The mortality rate of cattle can reach 20%.

Prevention and cure measures

Strengthen nursing care for sick animals to avoid the hot sun and wind and rain, and feed digestible fodder; wash mouth and hoof with 0.1% potassium permanganate solution every day, and then apply ice boron powder; in order to prevent infection of other diseases, antibiotics such as sulfonamides or penicillin can also be injected; quarantine should be strengthened when cattle and sheep are not purchased from epidemic areas, and regular medicine baths are given to cattle and sheep to dispel external parasites. Cattle and sheep over 6 months of age were vaccinated with the vaccine once a year.
