Last Updated: 2024/11/05, The selection of tree bonsai material mainly refers to the selection of tree species and pile appearance. The choice of tree species should not only consider the factors suitable for making bonsai, but also fully consider the aesthetic interest and personal hobby of the producer or appreciator (consumer). Because everyone has different levels of education, appreciation habits, and aesthetics, some like pine and cypress trees that are evergreen all the year round, some prefer deciduous trees that are rich in seasonal changes, and some prefer colorful flower and fruit trees. Therefore, the selection of bonsai tree species must first be people-oriented.

Therefore, the choice of bonsai tree species must first be people-oriented, fully respect the aesthetic requirements of different people, and choose from person to person.

The choice of stump appearance is very important, in a sense, it determines the quality of the work. As the saying goes, the mountain is not high, but if there is an immortal, there is a spirit. Bonsai material has the same truth, the quality of the pile does not necessarily depend on whether the tree species are valuable, but mainly depends on whether the pile is old, strange and smart. The specific selection criteria are:

(1) choose the appearance of bare, curved and disjointed pelvic roots.

(2) choose the sturdy and tortuous trunk, strange and clumsy appearance.

(3) choose the tree species with small and resilient leaves and evergreen.

(4) choose tree species with gorgeous flowers and fruits, fragrant and spectacular.

(5) choose the tree species with slow growth, long life, strong germination and resistance to pruning.

The actual selection of the above items is difficult to be complete, generally in line with a few of them can be considered for selection.
