Prevention and Control of White Silk Disease of Cymbidium

Published: 2024-11-05 Author: mysheen
Last Updated: 2024/11/05, White silk disease is caused by fungus Selerotiumrolfsii, which harms seedlings to the base and roots of adult stems. Cymbidium is more likely to be infected with the disease. During the disease, white hyphae can be seen at the base of the stem, browning at the base of the stem, root drying, and the formation of a large number of small brown sclerotia, resulting in the softening of the stem base and death. The pathogen has a wide host range and does serious harm to bulbous flowers and perennial flowers. And it has strong saprophytic nature and can survive in the matrix or old basin for a long time by sclerotia. This pathogen can also be infected with cymbidium.

White silk disease is caused by fungus Selerotiumrolfsii, which harms seedlings to the base and roots of adult stems. This pathogen can also infect the roots and leaves of Phalaenopsis plants, causing root rot or leaf soft rot. The initial symptoms on the seedlings are not easy to distinguish from soft rot or blight in appearance, but the white mycelium peculiar to white silk disease will grow on the damaged site and substrate before long, and then turn to brown sclerotia particles. The preventive measures are as follows:

(1) do not use unsterilized old seedling plates and substrates.

(2) clean up other hosts and do a good job in the environmental hygiene of Orchid Garden.

(3) inspect the garden, pick up diseased plants and leaves, remove and burn them.

(4) when the disease is frequent, it can be sprayed with 50% Fodonine or 75% metoprolol wettable powder.
