Cotton is a large plant crop with deep roots, luxuriant leaves, many branches and long flowering period, which likes temperature and light, and is not resistant to shade; cotton has long growth period, large branches and leaves, large transpiration system, more water demand, developed root system, strong water absorption and drought tolerance; cotton requires deep soil, loose soil, suitable soil moisture and low groundwater level. Cotton has mild saline-alkali tolerance and has wide adaptability to soil acidity and alkalinity, but it is suitable for neutral to slightly alkaline.

During the growth period, cotton needs not only a large amount of nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium and calcium, sulfur, magnesium, sodium, iron and other elements, but also boron, manganese, zinc, copper, molybdenum and other trace elements. Before the full flowering stage, the vegetative growth was dominant and the nitrogen uptake was larger; after the full flowering stage, the nitrogen and potassium uptake decreased relatively, while the phosphorus uptake increased relatively.

Cotton is mainly used as raw material for textile industry. The value of textile use depends on the quality of the fiber. Length is an important indicator of fiber quality; the longer the fiber is, the higher the spinning count is. The fiber needs to have good strength and fineness at the same time.
