Cotton "Dong a" Genic male sterile Germplasm

Its sterile traits are mainly controlled by a pair of recessive nuclear genes. It has the advantages of stable inheritance of sterility, easy transfer, strong combining ability, wide restorer line, about 50% sterile plant rate and 100% sterility per plant. It has the characteristics of high yield and wide adaptability. A derived male sterile line 1 was bred by using Dong A genic male sterile germplasm. Among them, several derived male sterile lines were combined and 12 hybrids which had been approved were selected.

Seed production techniques, using the derived male sterile lines of Dong A genic male sterile germplasm and the selected hybrids, have been applied to the production area steadily since the 1980s. the scope of application expanded from Sichuan to Hubei, Jiangsu, Shandong, Henan, Shaanxi and other provinces. By 1995, incomplete statistics had extended 610000 hectares, increased lint income by about 150kg per hectare, and created an additional output value of 962 million yuan. Cotton "Dong A" genic male sterile germplasm is unprecedented in similar research at home and abroad. "Dong A" genic male sterile germplasm was used to select derived male sterile lines, hybrids and its matching application techniques. It has been used in large-scale production in China for the first time, which has achieved great social and economic benefits, and opened up a new technical way for the utilization of cotton heterosis.
