Plant morphology: shrubs or small trees, more than 3m high, lenticels longitudinally small, brown, many and obvious, there is a yellowish transverse septum in the pith of the branches. Leaf blade broadly ovate, ovate, triangular-ovate or ovate-elliptic, long 7~15cm, wide 6~13cm, apex acuminate, base cuneate or broadly cuneate, entire or undulate-toothed, both surfaces sparsely pubescent or subglabrous, petiole long 2~8cm. Cymes arranged in corymbose, terminal or axillary. Calyx purplish red, 5-lobed, nearly reaching base; Corolla white, slightly pink, Corolla tube slender, ca. 2cm, apical 5-lobed, lobes narrowly elliptic, long 5~10mm, broadly 3~5mm. There are 4 stamens. Filaments and style protruding from the Corolla, style no longer than stamens, stigma 2-lobed. The fruit is a berry-shaped drupe, 6~8mm in diameter, enclosed in an enlarged purplish red persistent calyx, and the exocarp is blue-purple at maturity. The flower and fruit period is from June to November.
Collection location: born in shrubs on Xiangyang hillside, roadside or village side. Distributed in Liaoning, Hebei, Henan, Shanxi, Shandong, Jiangsu, Anhui, Zhejiang, Jiangxi, Fujian, Taiwan, Hubei, Hunan, Guangdong, Guangxi, Sichuan, Guizhou, Yunnan and other provinces and regions.

Leaves opposite, broadly ovate to elliptic, 7-15 cm long, 5-9 cm wide, apex acuminate, base broadly cuneate to truncate, entire or wavy teeth, peculiar odor, bitter and astringent taste.
Functional indications: dispelling rheumatism and lowering blood pressure. Treat rheumatism arthralgia, hemiplegia, hypertension, migraine, dysentery, hemorrhoids, carbuncle, scabies.
