A Fine Variety of Fresh Jujube--Yangguang Jujube

Yangguang jujube is a new fresh jujube variety discovered by Forestry Bureau of Yuncheng County of Shandong Province in Wujieshou Township in the mid-1980s. It is called Changzao by local people. After 8 successive times of transfer propagation in 10 years, the comprehensive characters of each generation were stable. In 2001, it was identified and named Yangguangzao. At present, the variety has been popularized to 166hm2.

The tree is open, the height of mature tree is 4.5m, the crown diameter is 3.5m. Bark dark red brown, thin crack, easier to peel off. Date head reddish brown, branch quality is softer, bearing secondary branches 4-5. Jujube strands are short cylindrical, 1-3 jujube are produced in juvenile stage, 3-5 jujube are produced in adult stage. Jujube hanging length 14.5-17.4cm, internode length 1.4-2.2cm, 8-12 leaves. Leaves broad, broadly ovate or shortly elliptic, thick, subleathery, dark green, glossy. The flowers are medium in quantity.

The fruit is extremely large, nearly short cylindrical, average fruit weight 27.5 g, large fruit weight 35g, size and shape are regular. Fruit shoulders and apex broadly rounded and flat, without furrows. Fruit surface smooth, red brown color after maturity, bright bright. The stem depression is medium deep and the top depression is shallow and wide. Fruit stalk 0.34-0.82cm long. Peel thin, thick flesh, light green, texture crisp without residue, juice, very sweet acid, rock sugar taste thick. The whole jujube in crispy ripening stage contains 36%-38% soluble solids, edible rate is 97%, fresh eating quality is good. Adaptability, wind resistance, resistance to ring disease, anthracnose, fruit cracking resistance. Grafted seedlings bear fruit in the same year after planting, and economic yield is formed after 2-3 years. The average fruit of jujube hanging is 1.6.

In Yuncheng County in the southwest of Shandong Province, it sprouts in the first ten days of April, develops leaves in the middle ten days of April, blooms in the middle ten days of May, ripens in the middle ten days of September, and some late flowers and fruits mature in the first ten days of October. The fruit growth period is 110-120 days.

This variety has strong adaptability, early bearing and high yield. It is a late-maturing fresh food variety with good quality and can be developed and popularized for commercial cultivation.
