Cut flowers harvested and kept fresh: Phalaenopsis
[other middle name] Phalaenopsis
Phalaenopsis of Orchidaceae
[country of origin] Malaysia and other tropical regions
[plant character] Phalaenopsis is a perennial herb. The plant height is 50cm and 60cm. Flowering stems drawn from leaf axils, arched, 70-80 cm long; racemes; florets 10-12 cm in diam., waxy, lip white, lobes large. The natural flowering period is from October of that year to January of the following year.
[cut flower harvest] the harvest site is the pedunculated inflorescence of Phalaenopsis. The florets at the base of the inflorescence can be harvested when 2-3 florets bloom, and the operation is best carried out when the temperature is low in the morning. The product is temporarily placed in a place where there is no direct sunlight and pre-cooled as soon as possible.
[grading] the flowers collected should be graded on the premise of typical characteristics, no damage, pollution and good visual effect: the length of the first-grade cut flower is about 70 cm, the length of the second-grade cut flower is about 60 cm, and the length of the third-grade cut flower is about 50 cm. The difference in length of cut flowers of the same grade should not exceed the standard ±2 cm.
[packaging] the pedunculated inflorescences of the same grade and variety of Phalaenopsis were packed and put into the film-lined tile carton marked with product name and vent respectively. Be careful not to damage the petals during operation, otherwise its commodity value will decline accordingly.
[fresh-keeping management] cut flowers can be stored in an environment with a relative humidity of 90%-95% and a temperature of 13-15 ℃. It should be noted that Phalaenopsis is vulnerable to chilling injury when the storage temperature is lower than 13 ℃. Phalaenopsis can be cultured in water by inserting a small fresh-keeping tube at the base of the pedicel, which is not only fresh-keeping, but also easy to pack.
[storage period] according to the above method, the pedunculated inflorescences of Phalaenopsis can usually be stored for 10 to 20 days without affecting the decorative effect.
[horticultural application] with slender stems and elegant flowers, butterfly orchids are a very popular bouquet material. The life of bottled water is very long.
[listing Tip] the supply time of cut Phalaenopsis flowers is mainly from October of that year to January of the following year. For cut flowers produced back to season, the time to market can be advanced or delayed.

Cultivation of Phalaenopsis on peat soil
The Phalaenopsis sold on the market are all packed in plastic pots and cultivated with water moss. I have bought several pots and planted them on the balcony, all of which died because of rotten roots. In the spring of 2003, the remaining 3 pots of Phalaenopsis were removed from the plastic pot, removed the rotten roots and planted in the porcelain pot, and the cultivation substrate was peat soil. After planting for more than two months, it was found that there were new leaves sprouting in the heart of Phalaenopsis. Phalaenopsis has been cultivated with peat soil for nearly 4 years, growing well and blooming year after year. The peat soil with some fiber can be selected to change the clods.

Treatment of rotten roots of Phalaenopsis at home
Sometimes improper watering or poor soil matrix will lead to rotting roots in Phalaenopsis in the family. Here are the measures to prevent and cure the rotting roots. First of all, the selection of basin soil, to choose loose, aerated, permeable matrix. Such as peat mixed with perlite, peat mixed with pine needles, moss and so on. Use organic fertilizer as base fertilizer. The second is to keep the basin soil moist, but not stagnant water, which is the main reason for rotting roots. It should be observed that after watering, the soil can not seep down for a long time, indicating that the basin soil has been used for a long time and its density has increased, so the soil should be changed quickly.
