Encephalitis refers to the inflammation of meninges and brain parenchyma caused by infection or toxic factors. in a broad sense, encephalitis includes a variety of brain infections and encephalopathy.

[etiology] suppurative encephalitis is mostly caused by suppurative bacteria, head trauma, adjacent suppurative foci and systemic sepsis through blood transfer. Parasitic encephalitis can also be caused by the migration process of some parasitic larvae into the brain tissue.

Non-suppurative encephalitis is more common in secondary infectious diseases, such as canine distemper and rabies. Bacterial diseases can also cause encephalitis.

[symptoms] Clinical symptoms vary according to the location of inflammation in the brain. When the inflammatory focus is far away from the cerebral cortex and the scope is small, the clinical symptoms are mild, especially the disturbance of consciousness. Sick dogs can show agitation or high depression, or even do not know their owners, some keep barking, running aimlessly, bumping into obstacles, and some sick dogs show retreating in circles, local or systemic spastic convulsions. Depressed animal head drooping, eyes half-closed, head obstacles do not move, slow to respond to the outside world, incorrect posture, weak muscles all over the body, some sick dogs fall to the ground sleepy.

When inflammation develops to the deep part of the brain or there are inflammatory lesions in the deep part of the brain, it can cause systemic or incomplete paralysis, dyskinesia of limbs, ptosis, dilated pupils, optic nerve, masseter muscle, pharyngeal muscle, larynx and tongue paralysis. Lying still on the ground, the external reaction was completely lost.

Most of the patients with encephalitis have elevated body temperature and have no appetite in the later stage.

[treatment] eliminating inflammation, sedation, reducing intracranial pressure and preventing brain edema.

(1) Sodium sulfadiazine was injected 50 mg / kg body weight intravenously, twice a day. Penicillin 50000 units / kg body weight, intravenous or intramuscular injection; gentamicin 40,000 units / kg body weight, intravenous or intramuscular injection, twice a day.

(2) sedation, chlorpromazine 1-2 mg / kg body weight, or phenobarbital sodium 5-10 mg / kg body weight, intramuscular or intravenous injection twice a day.

(3) mannitol injection 1-2 g / kg body weight, 25% grape injection 5 ml / kg body weight, mixed intravenous injection.

(4) put the sick dog in a clean and ventilated kennel, keep quiet and give nutritious food.
