Eight key points of culturing cuckoo
Rhododendron has luxuriant branches and colorful flowers, so we must pay attention to the following eight points in cultivation and management:
1. Mud pot is the most suitable pot for selected flower Shen rhododendron, especially for young seedlings, because the mud basin absorbs water and breathes air, which is beneficial to the growth and development of roots. Purple sand basin can also be used for more than 3-year-old seedlings, but more broken tiles and coarse-grained soil should be padded at the bottom of the basin to facilitate ventilation and drainage, otherwise the roots are easy to rot.
Second, the pot soil rhododendron likes to be loose, fertile, good drainage, pH value between 5.5,6.5 slightly acidic mud or culture soil. If you use more calcareous alkaline soil or poorly drained heavy clay, you will not be able to live.
Third, pay attention to the water quality of cuckoo watering it is best to use stored Rain Water, or add 0.1% ferrous sulfate ink alum, or fermented rice washing water. If it is irrigated with alkaline water, the roots of the basin soil will be alkalized quickly, the leaves will yellowing and fall off, and the growth potential will be weakened, which will seriously affect the growth and development.
Fourth, the root system of rhododendron is thin and weak, and the ability of absorbing fertilizer is poor, so fertilization should not be too thick. The spring cuckoo is from February to March, and the summer cuckoo is from March to April, and the thin phosphate fertilizer such as bone powder and superphosphate is applied for 2 times. After the flower fade, the thin nitrogen fertilizer such as green fertilizer and cake fertilizer was applied every 7 to 10 days for 3 to 4 times in a row. It is the budding stage of cuckoo from August, and the compound fertilizer combined with nitrogen and phosphorus should be applied once every 10 to 15 days until the middle of October. For 1-and 2-year-old seedlings, little or no fertilization was applied, while sick seedlings and weak seedlings were not fertilized.
Fifth, sunscreen summer rhododendron is a semi-negative flower, avoid hot sun exposure in summer, otherwise branches and leaves will be burned and withered yellow. In early summer, shade around noon; in midsummer and early autumn, shade all day.
6. The ideal temperature for safe overwintering of rhododendron is 5 ~ 8 ℃ for over 3-year-old seedlings and about 10 ℃ for 1-2-year-old seedlings. Therefore, it is necessary to enter the house in time to keep warm. But the room temperature should not exceed 12 ℃, otherwise it is easy to cause young leaves to grow and buds to wilt and fall off.
7. The buds of cuckoos with proper bud thinning have been formed in winter. To judge whether the buds can blossom in spring, the simplest way is to pat the buds with the palm of your hand. Those who feel harder are effective buds that can blossom. If there are too many effective buds, it is necessary to sparse buds properly. As long as one bud is retained for each branch, only in this way can the nutrients be concentrated, the flower pregnancy is huge, and the florescence is prolonged.
Eighth, after stable pruning cuckoo blossoms, in addition to picking the residual flowers in time, it is also necessary to cut off long branches, over-dense branches, thin and weak branches, diseased branches, and so on, so as to make the tree shape plump. If the cuckoo bonsai has been modeled, it should be cut or cut according to the tree type and Panza, so as to maintain the natural trend, enhance the artistic beauty, and improve its ornamental value and economic value.

Cultivation and Management of large Rhododendron cultivated in Pot
The cuckoo garden in Wuxi is mainly potted cuckoos, which has a number of large rhododendrons more than 50 or 60 years old, which is difficult to manage. in addition, the annual rhododendron flower show is held every year, and the cuckoos generally grow 20 days later after the exhibition. at that time, it will face a hot summer that is extremely disadvantageous to the growth of rhododendron. In order to enhance the growth of the cuckoo, we used our brains on the cultivated soil. The root system of rhododendron is shallow and thin, and it has high requirements for basin soil. In the past, we have been using orchid mud as a cultivation soil for turning pots, but in recent years we have found the market.
