Last Updated: 2024/09/19, Awnless brome, also known as smooth brome and awnless grass, is the most widely cultivated brome forage grass in China. It is a perennial herb with erect stems and well-developed roots. It is characterized by a short rhizome and a closed leaf sheath. This is the main feature that distinguishes it from many other grasses. Awnless brome is especially suitable for cold and dry climate, but not for high temperature and high humidity areas, and the optimum growth temperature is 14-25 ℃. Extremely cold-resistant, can still grow normally in areas with a low temperature of-30 ℃ in winter, and can withstand-4 in the northeast with snow cover.

Awnless brome is especially suitable for cold and dry climate, but not for high temperature and high humidity areas, and the optimum growth temperature is 14-25 ℃. It has strong cold resistance and can grow normally when the low temperature reaches-30 ℃ in winter. it can withstand the low temperature of-48 ℃ when there is snow cover in the northeast. It is most suitable to grow in well-drained and fertile loam or clay loam area, can tolerate slight saline-alkali soil and acid soil, and has weak water flooding resistance. Awnless brome has strong adaptability and is an important cultivated forage in arid and cold areas. it has extensive adaptability in Northeast, Northwest and North China.

The xerophyte of the genus Bromus has a long life span, proper management and a utilization period of more than 20 years. However, because the underground rhizome of awnless brome is more developed, with the increase of life years, the rhizome spreads and the turf accumulates, which compacts the soil surface, hinders water permeability and ventilation, and affects the yield. therefore, attention should be paid to raking and loosening the soil in the use of awnless brome grass for 6-7 years in order to maintain the yield. Awnless brome is rich in nutritional value, and all kinds of livestock like to eat. Under the condition of good soil fertilizer in northern China, awnless brome can produce 3000-4500 kg of fresh grass per mu and can cut 2-3 stubble.
