In nature, yellow box turtles live in forest margins, weeds and shrubs in hilly and mountainous areas, and in quiet places such as tree roots and stone crevices. The activity is dark and not far from the valleys with running water. Like to live in groups, often see multiple turtles in the same cave. The pattern of diurnal activity varies from season to season.

Yellow box turtles belong to semi-aquatic turtles and cannot live in deep waters. Under the condition of artificial feeding, when the temperature reached 18 ℃ from April to May and from September to November, the turtles had less morning and evening activities, and more activities around noon, while the annual temperature from June to August was 25: 34C, mainly at night, early in the morning or evening, and hidden in caves, trees or sand during the day. In case of rainy season, we often go outside the cave to get caught in the rain.

The period from December to January to March of the following year is the hibernating period of turtles. When the temperature is 19 °C, the tortoise stops eating. 1 when the temperature drops to about 10 °C, the tortoise goes into hibernation. When hibernating, they like to hide in caves, branches or under a thick layer of withered grass, mostly in the sun and leeward. When the temperature is 13 ℃, the turtle wakes up again.
