The production of rhododendron for greening is the direction, don't use wild piles.
In view of the phenomenon that some seedling growers use wild cuckoos as rootstocks for engineering modeling cuckoos, Li Yong, secretary general of the cuckoo branch of the China Flower Association, said recently: modeling is an effective way to increase the added value of cuckoos for greening, but the use of wild piles for grafting is not recommended.
It is understood that although there are not many nurseries mainly for planting cuckoos for greening projects in China, annual supply has been achieved in many places in the south. Therefore, in the case of no disaster, the cuckoo used for greening in China is basically saturated. Li Yong believes that in this case, the majority of seedling growers can make more efforts in modeling to gain market share with product differences.
When modeling cuckoos, seedling growers should first consider the selection of rootstock varieties and modeling methods. Li Yong said that from the current domestic production of rhododendrons and some fast-growing spring cuckoos, thick seedlings can be selected as rootstocks. At the same time, the modeling style of cuckoos should be enriched as much as possible. In the past, cuckoos could do anything that pine and cypress plants could do, such as lions and tigers. When large rhododendron is used in public green space, it can be a single plant or a combination of multiple plants. In addition, florescence control technology is now very mature, seedling growers can also consciously make cuckoos for some large-scale activities, such as the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, the 2010 Shanghai World Expo and so on. For Beijing and other areas where the soil is not suitable for rhododendron growth, potted plants can be considered.
The development of modeling rhododendron can bring new opportunities for the old nursery. Li Yong said that the cuckoo branch of the China Flower Association has learned that there are many unsalable cuckoos planted in some old nurseries due to poor shape, weak branches and other reasons. If it is styled, a new selling point can be formed.
Li Yong opposes the use of wild cuckoos as rootstocks, which he believes is the destruction of wild cuckoo resources. At the same time, he suggested that we can step up the domestication of wild rhododendron, and use tissue culture to increase the number of reproduction, try to solve some of the technical problems, and adopt the form of artificial cultivation to meet the market demand for rhododendron rootstocks.
