Evergreen trees, 6m to 15m high. The bark is brown, the height under the branch is 2 to 4 m, and the crown is ovoid. Leaves opposite, leathery. Long elliptic moment round, long 12~25cm, wide 6~9cm, entire, apex obtuse, base retuse or rounded, dark green above, with minute glandular spots, midvein conspicuous on both sides of the leaf, with marginal veins; petiole ca. 3mm. Cymes terminal or axillary; flowers white or yellowish, stamens numerous. The berries are turbinate or shallowly cup-shaped, flat and broad at the top, sunken in the middle, narrow in the lower part, 3~5cm long and wide, the pericarp fleshy, red as bright as wax when ripe. There are dark red, pink and red and white varieties. There are 1 or 2 developed seeds or none. The flowering period is from February to April and the fruiting period is from March to July.
Native to Malaysia and India. It is cultivated in many parts of Southeast Asia, and introduced in South China and Taiwan. Positive, like high temperature and humid climate, not resistant to cold and drought, and grow well in loose and fertile sandy loam or alluvial soil. Strong ability to resist air pollution.
Propagate with seeds, high-altitude striping, or grafting. Sowing should be carried out from March to April when the mature fruit is harvested and the pericarp is removed.
