Ecological Environment of Dangshen
The annual seedlings of Codonopsis pilosula are trailing and rarely bloom. The plants of more than two years are twining and generally blossom. The growing period has strong adaptability to the environment. Wild Codonopsis pilosula is vertically distributed on the semi-shady and semi-sunny or shady slope at an altitude of 1400m to 2100m, and the slope grows in the range of 15 °~ 20 °. Codonopsis pilosula is a deep-rooted plant, which is suitable to grow in sandy loam with deep soil layer, loose soil, good drainage and rich humus. The soil acidity and alkalinity should be neutral or acidic soil, and the pH value is generally between 5.5 and 7.5. Codonopsis pilosula likes mild and cool climate, is afraid of heat, and is more resistant to cold. Codonopsis pilosula does not have very strict requirements for water, and it can grow normally under the condition of annual precipitation 500~1200mm and average relative humidity of about 70%. Codonopsis pilosula has strict requirements for light, seedlings like shade, adults like light.

Biological characteristics of Codonopsis pilosula
Codonopsis pilosula has strong adaptability, warm and cool climate. The requirements of moisture, temperature and sunlight are different in different growth stages. The suitable temperature for seed germination is 18-20 ℃. Seedlings like shade, adults like light, can tolerate high temperature of 33 ℃, and can survive the winter safely under-30 ℃. Root rot is easy to occur when drainage is unfavorable and high temperature and humidity are high. Codonopsis pilosula is a deep root plant, soil PH6.5-7.0is suitable, avoid continuous cropping, generally should be replanted at intervals of 3-4 years, legume and Gramineae crops are better in the previous crop.
