Distribution of origin:

Subtropical regions of China are born in humid places under dense forests of mountains and valleys.

Morphological features:

Ophiopogon coloured leaves, variants of broad-leaved Ophiopogon japonicus, plant height about 30 cm. The root is slender and branched, and sometimes locally dilated into a small spindle-shaped meat root with stolons. The leaves are broad linear, leathery, the edge of the leaf is golden, the inside of the edge is silver-white and emerald-green vertical stripes, basic dense clusters.

The flower stem is tall from the foliage, the flowers are red-purple, and 4-5 clusters grow in axils of bracts, arranged in slender racemes.

Growth habits:

Seeds globose, initially green, purple-black at maturity. Ophiopogon japonicus is suitable for growing in the shade under the forest, or at the edge of the grassland, or around the waterscape, regardless of soil, it can be widely used in northern China, and the leaves do not wither in winter. The new leaves germinated in the middle of April, the flowering period was long, the flower stems were drawn continuously from late June to early September, and the seeds matured in the middle of September.

Garden use:

Ophiopogon japonicus is a rare evergreen, cold-resistant and drought-resistant ground cover plant with excellent leaves, lawns, waterscape, rockery and platform modification in modern landscape gardens.

Reproduction and cultivation:

The seeds matured in mid-September.

Ophiopogon japonicus is generally propagated by split-plant method. In early April, the old plant can be dug up, the upper leaves can be cut off, and the lower part is 5-7 cm long. 2-3 plants are planted in a hole with a row spacing of about 20 cm, and the bare ground can be completely covered after a year. Ophiopogon japonicus can also be propagated by sowing. After 50 days of spring sowing, seedlings emerge, and the emergence rate is about 80%. The sowing seedlings can be used for landscaping or indoor pot planting after nursery cultivation for one year.
