Melon, also known as cantaloupe, melon and Bailan melon, is an annual trailing herb of cucumber of Cucurbitaceae. It has a long history of cultivation and has been widely cultivated in China. So when will melons be sown? How do you plant it? Let's have a look with the editor.

1. Growth habits

Muskmelon is suitable to grow on loam or sandy loam with deep soil layer, rich in organic acid, good fertility and good permeability. It is resistant to drought and waterlogging. However, the root distribution is shallow, so higher soil moisture and lower air humidity are needed. The air relative humidity is best controlled at about 50 degrees, the suitable temperature for its growth is between 18 and 25 degrees, and the suitable temperature for flowering and fruiting is between 22 and 25 degrees.

2. Seed selection and sowing

To select excellent varieties according to local soil, climate and needs, the seeds should be disinfected before sowing and then sowed after sowing. The disinfection method is to soak the seeds in a low concentration of carbendazim solution for 10 minutes. Sowing can be divided into spring sowing and autumn sowing. Spring sowing is from February to March and autumn sowing is from August to November. When sowing, you can choose nutrition bowl or nutrition bag to raise seedlings and direct seeding, and generally choose direct seeding in the folk. It is necessary to apply sufficient base fertilizer before sowing, 3000-5000 kg of rotten farm manure and 50 kg of compound fertilizer per mu, deep application in the pond after ditch application, and then sowing 2-3 seeds in each pond.

3. Seedling stage management

Cantaloupe seedlings grow very fast after emergence, especially the seedlings cultivated in nutrition bowls or nutrition bags, in order to avoid excessive growth of seedlings, water and temperature should be strictly controlled. After emergence, the temperature should be controlled at 20-25 degrees in the daytime and 10 degrees at night, and the management of fertilizer and water should be strengthened at the same time. Applying thin compound fertilizer and water once a week can promote the growth of seedlings. In addition, in the seedling stage, it is necessary to plough and weed in time to promote root development, many diseases come from the root system, the root system is underdeveloped, the disease is more serious.

4. Pest control

Melon has many diseases and insect pests, and the main diseases at seedling stage are root rot, powdery mildew and rust. Metalaxyl or metalaxyl aluminum and copper can be sprayed to control root rot and Bordeaux solution to control powdery mildew and rust. The main pests are aphids with high frequency, followed by night moth, armyworm, cotton bollworm and other pests, which can be controlled by low-toxic and efficient pesticides. For example, aphids can be controlled by imidacloprid, while others can be controlled by Uranus EC and methanolide EC spray.
