A serious outbreak of E. coli O157:H7 contamination in the US and Canada has prompted the Food and Drug Administration to remind Chinese to wash lettuce from overseas countries and tighten import controls. Chief of Food Import Control Division of the Food and Drug Administration, Mr Ng Chung-hee, said that there had been no cases of O157:H7 poisoning in edible lettuce in China in recent years, and no cases of O157:H7 poisoning had been detected in imported products at the border.

At present, it is the season for domestic lettuce production. The head lettuce and vine lettuce suitable for autumn and winter production enter the production period. Is the vine lettuce produced in China safe? Wu Zongxi responded that from May to June this year, the Food and Drug Administration sampled 30 lettuce salad products from the local health bureau to test for Escherichia coli and Escherichia coli. The results all met the requirements and could be consumed with confidence.
