Campus lunch discussion calls for reasonable price increase to enhance campus gatekeeper ability
Share51 + 1 Tweet1 EmailShares 52 held a "Taichung Campus lunch Food Safety Symposium" on May 7, inviting lunch-related staff of primary and secondary schools to discuss the current problems of food inspection in schools and the feasibility of using non-genetically modified soybean products. During the meeting, a consensus was reached on a reasonable increase in lunch prices and the improvement of food safety. The school expects the relevant units to assist in the formulation of public domain contracts, as well as the source control of food materials and assist the school in the sampling of food materials.
At present, almost all the soybean products eaten by Chinese people are made from genetically modified soybeans. In the industry, soybeans are divided into several grades, and most Chinese people eat second-class beans, which are often used as feed abroad, and the industry is called "feed beans."
According to the feasibility of "changing bean products to non-GM soybeans", of the 36 feedback forms collected, 17 schools indicated that they would consider trying to make "GM beans withdraw from campus" as the future direction, and 10 schools had implemented it through contractual norms and oral constraints. Another 8 schools indicated that they would not consider it because of price and other factors. However, it is worth mentioning that nearly 90% of the teachers said that the activity gave them a better understanding of the safety of food materials and the health risks of GM beans and their products.
Lin Xinrong, representative of the Taichung Municipal Supervision Union, responded to the teachers' doubts about the health risks of GM food in his capacity as a pediatrician, pointing out that rigorous medical research should take a generation of 30 years as the research period, however, GM food came out after the 1990s, which can be said to be the largest human trial, coupled with the fact that pediatric medicine has found signs of environmental exposure and precocious puberty caused by environmental hormones. Animal experiments across three generations have also confirmed the physical harm caused by GM foods, which shows the need to be cautious about GM foods.

Chang Ming-chun, who is also a member of the Taichung City School lunch Health Promotion Committee, said that judging from the speeches of the participants, it was found that schools received food safety-related information in bits and pieces. The Education Bureau and the Health Bureau have been inefficient in terms of test results and the distribution of relevant information, and will reflect the opinions collected at the forum to the relevant municipal government units. After that, the Taichung Branch will hold a "Symposium on Food Safety for Campus lunches" for parents, hoping to discuss the mechanism by which parents care about participating in school lunches, and encourage parents to participate in school lunch committees. Through parent chef supervision, they can establish an additional line of defense for their children's food safety in school, so that their children can eat safely at school, and by paying attention to safe diet, reduce the impact of pesticides and genetic changes on health and the environment.
