After the fruit seedlings are dug up from the nursery in the autumn, if they are not planted immediately, they should be stored well and planted in the early spring of the following year. The quality of fruit tree seedlings stored over winter not only affects the survival rate, but also causes the seedlings to rot, lose water and die due to poor terrain, soil selection or improper storage technology.

The method of storing fruit tree seedlings by ditch storage is simple, saves people and property, and has good storage effect. The experience of this kind of ditch storage seedlings is described as follows:

Selection of storage ditches. To choose higher terrain, good drainage of sandy soil and water level low, sunny leeward places, soil structure should also be solid, to prevent trench wall collapse. In order to facilitate transportation and less land occupation, the storage ditch can be located between the rows of young trees in the nursery, and the direction is good from east to west. The excavated soil should be placed on the north side of the ditch and built into an earth embankment to prevent wind. Generally, the ditch is 1.3 meters wide and 1.5 meters deep. The length can be determined according to the number of seedlings and the size of the land. It is generally about 25 meters long. The two ends of the ditch have a slight slope. When digging the ditch, do not shovel all the soil out, leaving a part of the soil for burying seedlings. After the ditch is dug, spread 15 cm of wet sand at the bottom of the ditch.

In order to maintain the purity of fruit tree seedlings, it is necessary to prevent the varieties from mixing when picking seedlings, and select the seedlings with extremely weak growth, serious injuries and serious diseases. Pest branches and branches under 60 cm are cut off. Don't overdo it when you prune the roots, just cut the big cuts.

Storage of fruit seedlings generally begins in early November, and the tidied saplings are placed obliquely to one end of the ditch, about 100 in each row, with an interval of 30 cm until they are almost full. The ends of the ditches should be loosened to allow seedlings to be harvested. Different varieties and different grades between the gap should be larger, and hang a written wooden plate as a mark. The soil thickness between rows and between plants should be 2/3 of the seedling height, and it is inconvenient to take seedlings too thick. After burying soil, according to soil moisture, appropriate watering.

After thawing in spring, the seedlings will be out of the ditch. If the temperature rises after April, the fruit seedlings will germinate easily. Take seedlings late, if some have begun to germinate, you can use the method of inverted ditch to delay the germination of seedlings for 7-8 days. When going out of the ditch, dig out the soil filled at one end of the ditch first, then gently remove the soil above the roots of each row of seedlings, and then gently pull out the seedlings. The roots of the seedlings made of mountain stator are very fragile and easy to break. Pay attention to pulling out gently when taking seedlings.
