In the cowpea planting process, if the stem vine growth is too exuberant, sustainable flowering and pod, but when a high yield, the plant growth will be weak, leaves withered and yellow fall off, root growth is poor, pods are less, this phenomenon is called Fu rest. So what is the cause of cowpea rest? How to prevent it? Let's take a look.

First, the cause of rest.

The main results are as follows: 1. Sowing too late: the plant misses the suitable growth climate temperature. After the first yield peak, some newly picked flower branches do not have many pods, resulting in growth inhibition, so the second yield is lower.

2. Insufficient nutrition: after the first yield peak, the plant consumes a lot of nutrients, and then when there is no adequate supply of fertilizer and water, the plant will lose fat or senescence prematurely, grow new branches without excess nutrients, and stop blooming and poding. so there is no second yield peak.

3. Environmental factors: in the process of cowpea growth, if the cowpea grows smoothly in the early stage and encounters a high-temperature and rainy climate in the later stage, there will be too much water in the field, resulting in poor soil permeability, limited or damaged root growth, and reduced absorptive capacity. therefore, the phenomenon of falling leaves is caused, and there is no ability to send new branches, bloom and bear pods.

4. Improper pruning: during the growth of the plant, if the pruning is not timely, it will lead to the excessive growth of the plant, consume a lot of nutrients, and cause the phenomenon of rest.

II. Preventive measures

1. Timely sowing: the sowing time of cowpea is relatively large, and it generally bears pods in the cool period in autumn, so the sowing time should be controlled well, according to the growth period of the plant, so that it can bear pods for a long time and accumulate enough nutrients before podding. In addition, attention should be paid to the density when sowing, so that the sowing should not be too dense, so as not to affect the ventilation and light transmittance of the plant, otherwise it will also cause the phenomenon of rest.

2. Fertilization: cowpea itself has nitrogen-fixing bacteria, so the application amount of nitrogen fertilizer should be controlled and should not be too much, nitrogen can be properly supplemented during fertilization, and phosphorus and potassium fertilizer should be added to make the plant grow healthily and meet the needs of later growth. Generally speaking, a top dressing fertilizer is needed in the seedling stage and harvest period, and 15 kg of ammonium sulfate per mu is applied in the seedling stage, and thin manure and urine fertilizer can be applied in the harvest period to prevent plant premature senescence.

3. Strengthen field management: in the later stage of cowpea growth, we should pay attention to the control of moisture and only need to keep the soil moist, while in summer when it is high-temperature and rainy, it is necessary to strengthen the measures of drainage and waterlogging in the field so as not to accumulate too much water and affect the root system. in the future, we should loosen the soil and weed in time to increase the permeability of the soil.

4. Pruning and pruning: when the lateral branches under the first inflorescence of the main vine grow to 3cm, they should be knocked off in time, while the lateral branches on the first inflorescence should leave leaves pinched, generally leaving one leaf, and in the middle and later stage of growth, two leaves should be retained, so that the lateral branches can be used to blossom and bear pods and increase the yield. When the main vine grows to 15-20 stem nodes, pinch its tip and promote the extraction of its side branches. through this pruning, the phenomenon of rest can be avoided.

The above are the causes and preventive measures of cowpea rest. I hope I can help you. If you want to know more about cowpea planting, please follow us.
