Last Updated: 2024/09/19, The ovary of precocious watermelon is generally round (a few are oblong), and the female flowers with few hairs, thick and long fruit stalk and large petals are easy to sit on watermelon. Fruit-shaped oval melons (mostly mid-late ripening varieties), ovaries are oblong, hairy, fruit stalks thick and long, petals large female flowers easy to sit melon; the reverse is not easy.

A look at the morphological characteristics of female flowers Early maturity varieties watermelon ovary is generally round (a few were oblong), less hair, thick and long fruit stalk, petals larger female flowers easy to sit melon. Fruit shape oval melon (most of the late-maturing varieties), ovary was oblong, velutinous, thick and long fruit stalk, large petals of female flowers easy to sit melon; on the contrary, not easy to sit melon, even if sitting melon, melon is also small, poor quality. The second day after pollination, the fruit stalk elongates and bends downward, and the ovary expands obviously; the third day after pollination, the ovary has a transverse diameter of 2 cm and is shiny, indicating that the female flower has been seated. If female flower pollinates hind 2~3 days fruit stalk still fine short, ovary development is slow, colour and lustre is dim, such melon embryo cannot sit. Third, look at the growth of plants. The leaves are slightly curved inward at noon, stretched in the evening, the leaves are slightly flat, the internode length is not greater than the leaf length, the plants are compact, easy to sit melon. If the internodes of the plant become longer, the leaves are thin and narrow, and the petiole is longer than the leaves, it means that the plant is long, which easily leads to the delay of female flowers and is not easy to sit. If the plant grows too weak, it is easy to cause the female flower to appear too early, the ovary becomes smaller and round, although it is easy to sit melon, it often develops into deformed melon, or the melon embryo gradually withers in the later stage, resulting in melons. The distance between the female flower node and the top of the vine is 30~50 cm, the vine thickness is 0.6~0.8 cm, and the internode length is not greater than the leaf length, indicating that the plant grows normally and is easy to sit. If petiole is longer than leaf blade, the distance between female flower node and vine tip is more than 60 cm, indicating that plant is long and difficult to sit. If the distance between the female flower node and the top of the vine is less than 20 cm, it indicates that the plant grows too weak and is not easy to sit. Five look at the fertilizer and water management situation excessive application of chemical fertilizer, less or no organic fertilizer, or partial application of nitrogen fertilizer during growth, no or less phosphorus and potassium fertilizer, often resulting in excessive plant growth and delayed sitting. Watermelon before and after flowering strict requirements for water, if around noon to see leaves or vines at the head of the leaflet inward close together, leaf color gray, head drooping, indicating that the plant water shortage, easy to lead to flower drop, melons. Such as leaf or vine at the head of the leaflet stretch, leaf edge color becomes pale, the top of the head obviously tilted, indicating that the soil moisture is too much, the plant is prone to excessive growth, affecting the sitting melon.
