What kind of food do leopard turtles eat best?
Leopard turtles are completely vegetarian, and their staple foods are plant-based foods, such as vegetables, high-fiber plants, forages and so on. It is recommended to give foods that are low in protein and high in fiber, and avoid providing fruits and vegetables with more moisture every day. The recommended number of times is once a day. As for the feeding quantity, the leopard turtle seedlings of 5 centimeters should be able to eat as many as 3 or 6 leaves in the palm of the hand.
In the wild, leopard turtles live in semi-arid grasslands, dormant in hot seasons and dormant in cold seasons. At such times, it often hides in the caves dug by jackals, foxes and anteaters. We can guess that because its habitat is in the grassland, it eats all kinds of herbs. It also likes fruits and cactus plants.
In a captive environment, we'd better not feed it food with too much water, such as lettuce, potatoes, fruits and so on, because too much fruit and plants with too much water will often cause gastrointestinal diseases such as diarrhea. In fact, what they need is rough, high-fiber food. And if it is stocked, it will be solved by planting more herbs in the yard, and they will grow healthily. In winter, there is less grass used for food, and most of the vegetables bought in the supermarket are high in water and expensive. If possible, try to plant some forage grass indoors in flowerpots. They are very palatable to leopard turtles.
Leopard turtles also have a high demand for calcium, especially pregnant females and fast-growing leopard turtles. In the wild, they often nibble on weathered animal bones and hyena droppings to supplement calcium. When raising in captivity, we can go to the reptile shop to buy some "reptile-calcium powder" for them to eat.
Note: meat should not be given to them, as it will inevitably lead to overgrowth, bone growth, risk of blood lipids, stones and kidney disease. We should also pay attention to some plants, they are also high in protein, if you give leopard turtles legume food (high protein, low phosphorus-calcium ratio), it will also cause serious growth problems. In addition, their shells will not bulge if they are fed normally.
