Although squirrels are the larger species of rodents, they are not at the top of the food chain, so they are still threatened by predators. One is carnivorous beasts and birds of prey such as sables, weasels, golden eagles, owls, tiger-headed sea eagles, etc. Magpies and crows lay their hands on squirrel cubs during the breeding season. Let's take a look at what squirrel's natural enemies are.

Sable

Sable is a small and medium-sized animal that hunts small prey through smell and hearing, mostly building nests on the forest ground, hiding in nests in bad weather or being hunted, and even storing food inside. It feeds on squirrels, chipmunks, voles, pikas, hares, pheasants, grouses, birds, eggs and insects, and sometimes fish and feeds on honey, all kinds of nuts and berries.

Weasel

Weasel is a general term for weasel species. There are 17 species in the world. The common characteristics of this family are mouse-like, long-tailed, thin body, short limbs, small carnivores and agile movements. Some species use their anal glands to defend themselves. Most species have russet, white or yellow fur, mainly feed on rats, and also eat birds and eggs. Chickens or along river banks and streams prey on frogs, insects and fish, and sometimes steal poultry.

Golden eagle

Golden eagles generally live in mountainous or hilly areas, especially in the cliffs of valleys and nesting in the protruding parts of the mountain walls. It lives in alpine grasslands, deserts, river valleys and forests, and often goes to mountain hills and foothills in winter. The highest altitude can reach more than 4000 meters. There are dozens of prey, such as geese and ducks, pheasants, squirrels, birds, deer, goats, foxes, marmots, hares and so on. Sometimes they also eat small animals such as rats.
