Peacock fish is an oviparous fish with strong fecundity and early sexual maturation. Young fish can reproduce after 3-4 months of rearing. Sexual maturity is closely related to water temperature and feeding conditions sooner or later.

When breeding peacock fish, choose a larger aquarium tank and keep the water temperature at 26 degrees Celsius. PH6.8-7.4.At the same time, a variety of aquatic plants are needed, and then the fish are planted according to the ratio of 1 male to 4 female. After the fish are in estrus, the abdomen of the female fish gradually expands and black fetal plaques appear; the male fish constantly chase the female fish at this time, and the mating apparatus of the male fish is inserted into the cloaca of the female fish to expel sperm and carry out in vivo fertilization. When the fetal spot of the female fish becomes large and black and the anus protrudes, it can be fished into another aquarium to give birth.

The temperature in the waiting box should be 1-2 degrees higher than the original water temperature. Put moss or water plants at the bottom of the box to provide a shelter for small fish. After giving birth, the female fish should be fished out immediately so as not to eat the larvae. Or the plastic sheet should be surrounded by a funnel-shaped wall, immersed in water, and the female larvae should be placed in the funnel, so that the larvae will fall from the hole under the funnel into the water outside the funnel, and the females will not be able to eat the larvae.

Peacock fish give birth once a month, depending on the size of the female fish, each time can produce 10-120 larvae, a year quite a large number of larvae, so it is known as "millions of fish". When breeding, it should be noted that the breeding fish in the same nest should not exceed three generations, so as to avoid continuous inbreeding leading to species degradation, resulting in smaller and smaller fish bodies and shorter caudal fins. It is best to introduce the same species of fish for purposeful distant hybridization in order to prevent the degradation of the subspecies and achieve the purpose of improving the species. But the life span of peacock fish is very short, usually only 2-3 years. The first birth is generally less, about 1080, and the second is about 80,120. The price ranges from a few yuan to dozens of yuan or even a few hundred yuan.

Peacock fish will compete for territory in a narrow area, resulting in the death of the fish, so it is suitable for individual culture when the area is small.
