Black fish is a common edible fish in China, which has the characteristics of large individual, fast growth and high economic value. It is distributed in all major river systems in China. It is a fierce carnivorous fish with a huge appetite and can often eat all other fish in a lake or pond. Let's take a look at what food the black fish eats.

What food does black fish eat?

Black fish are ferocious carnivorous fish and are gluttonous, and their prey varies with the size of the fish. Seedlings less than 3 cm in length feed on chiropods, cladocera and chironomid larvae, while those less than 3-8 cm in length feed on aquatic insect larvae, tadpoles, shrimps, larvae, etc. Adults with a body length of more than 20 cm prey on a variety of small fish (crucian carp, meal strips, red-eyed trout, Loach and various juvenile fish) and frogs.

Predation habits of black fish

The swimming speed of black fish is slow, and it generally does not chase its prey, but hides near aquatic plants or other hidden objects, and pays close attention to the movement around it. Once it is found that there are palatable live baits passing through the vicinity, it will quickly attack, catch at one stroke and eat a large amount of food. It can often swallow about half of its body length of live bait, and the maximum capacity of its stomach can reach about 60% of its body weight. According to the anatomy, a 500g black fish swallowed eight grass carp species 10cm long in a relatively short time, and had the habit of killing each other, capable of swallowing individuals of the same kind whose body length was less than 2/3.

The food intake of black fish is closely related to the water temperature. In summer, when the water temperature is high, it is quite gluttonous and the food intake is large. When the water temperature is lower than 12 ℃, it will stop feeding. Under the condition of artificial feeding, when the animal feed is insufficient, it can also eat bean cake, vegetable cake, fish meal and other artificial formula feed.

The growing environment of black fish

1. Low-level fish: black fish are benthic fishes, which usually inhabit still water or micro-flow water with numerous aquatic plants and soft sediment, and are found in lakes, rivers, reservoirs, ponds and other waters, often diving in the bottom of the water, to swing their pectoral fins to maintain their balance.

2. Strong adaptability: black fish has strong adaptability to the changes of environmental factors in water, especially to hypoxia, water temperature and bad water quality. when the water body is anoxic, it can put its head out of the water and flatten the back. The head is long, the front is slightly flattened, and the rear is slightly raised. By means of the suprabranchial organ composed of bone fragments on the back of the first branchial arch and hyoid bone on display in the Gill cavity, oxygen is directly breathed in the air, so even in moist areas with little water and no water, it can survive for quite a long time, and can be out of the water for 3 to 4 days when the temperature range is from 10 °C to 15 °C.

3. Temperature environment: the survival water temperature of black fish is 0-41 ℃, and the optimum water temperature is 16-30 ℃. When the water temperature is above 8 ℃ in spring, it is often active in the middle and upper layers of the water body, and it is active in the upper layer of the water body in summer. When the water temperature drops below 6 ℃ in autumn, it swims slowly and often lurks in the depths of the water. When the water temperature is close to 0 ℃ in winter, it lives in the bottom mud and stops eating.

4. Jumping ability: the black fish has a strong jumping ability. When it is hot and stuffy, rain and water rise, the black fish will often jump out of the water and escape along the banks of the pond. When there is an impact of running water, it will also provoke the fish to jump and escape. If there is not enough bait in the pond, it will also be transferred to his pond, and its body will be like a snake and move forward slowly.
