Postpartum paralysis of sows is a serious acute and neurological disorder that occurs suddenly in sows, which is characterized by loss of consciousness and quadriplegia.

Pathogeny

The cause is not clear at present. It is generally believed that functional disorders occur in the cerebral cortex due to the sudden decrease of blood sugar and blood calcium and the decrease of postpartum blood pressure.

Symptom

I'm in low spirits. All reflexes weaken or even disappear. Significant loss of appetite or abstinence. Stop defecating and urinating after the stool is dry and hard. It is difficult to stand or unable to stand, or in a lethargic state. Little or no milk. Sometimes sick pigs lie down. No piglets are allowed to breast-feed.

Treatment

1. Enema with sodium sulfate or magnesium sulfate laxative or warm soap to remove feces in the rectum; at the same time, intravenous injection of 10% calcium gluconate 50-150ml.

2. Rub the diseased pig skin with straw handle or coarse cloth to promote the recovery of blood circulation and nerve function.

3. Increase mattress grass and often turn over sick pigs to prevent bedsores.

4. Feed piglets in foster care or artificial milk.
