Silverfish is a freshwater fish that can live offshore and has the habit of migrating from ocean to river. it is distributed from Shandong to Zhejiang coastal areas, especially in Wabu Lake, Huoqiu County, Poyang Lake, Chaohu Lake, Taihu Lake, Nushan Lake in Mingguang City, Anhui Province, Daguan Lake in Susong County, Anhui Province, Ma Lake in Leibo County, Sichuan and even Chongming in Shanghai at the mouth of the Yangtze River. Taihu, West Lake and Ma Lake are the three major silverfish lakes in China. A few species are distributed in Korea, Japan and Sakhalin in the far East of Russia.

The living habits of silverfish

1. Habitat: silverfish live mostly in the middle and lower layers of the pond, and are rarely found in the upper layer except for hypoxia, such as aquatic plants around the pond and at the bottom of the pond. Larvae and juveniles have a strong phototaxis, which can be induced into groups by light at night, but not in adults.

2. Feeding: silverfish is carnivorous fish, with small fish and shrimp as the staple food. The larvae fed on rotifers at 10 days after hatching, and then gradually selected larger and easily available zooplankton as food, in the order of nauplius, copepod larvae, Cladocera and copepod adults.

3. Reproduction: the sexual development and spawning characteristics of silverfish in the pond are basically the same as those in the natural waters, and the spawning peak is from late December to late January in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River. In hard-bottomed ponds with aquatic plants, spawning is more concentrated, and the fertilization rate can reach 80%.

Species distribution of silverfish

1. The Pearl Lake silverfish in Poyang County: the reason why the silverfish is called silverfish comes from the Pearl Lake silverfish in Poyang Lake. most of the silverfish in other places have other names. later, because they are of the same genus as the Pearl Lake silverfish, they are also unified as silverfish in official exchanges. Poyang County is known as "Silver Poyang", which is said to be related to the Pearl Lake silverfish.

Dongting Lake silverfish: Dongting Lake silverfish is cylindrical, its tail is slightly sideways, its head is flat, its tip is short, its eyes are large, its body is scaleless and it is as white as silver. If the body is soft without bones and intestines, it is semi-transparent, roaming in the water like a silver shuttle tapestry, fast like a silver arrow leaving the string, so the ancients referred to it as a hairpin and a silver shuttle.

3. The silverfish in the Yangtze River: the silverfish in the Yangtze River is slender and slightly cylindrical, and the back segment is flatter than the side. The head is flat and triangular. The mouth is big and the kiss is long and sharp. There are a row of fine teeth on the anterior maxilla, maxilla and mouth cover, a pair of canine teeth in the anterior part of the mandible, and a fleshy protuberance at the anterior end of the mandible. It takes zooplankton as the staple food and reaches sexual maturity in half a year.

4. Taihu Lake silverfish: Taihu Lake silverfish has four species: Taihu short-kissed silverfish, oligodentate short-kissed silverfish, big silverfish and Ray's silverfish. The yield of Taihu silverfish and Taihu short-kissed silverfish is the highest. Spring spawns on the stems of reeds and aquatic plants on the edge of Taihu Lake, and the spawning period is mainly from mid-May to mid-late June, which is also the flood season for catching silverfish.
