The life habits of pigeons include monogamy, late adult birds, plant seeds as staple food, salinity, cleanliness and high habitat, adaptability and alertness, memory and homing, wife habits and so on.

The conjugal nature of monogamy

Adult pigeons have a choice for their spouses. Once they mate, male and female pigeons always live closely together, sharing the responsibilities of building nests, hatching eggs, feeding squab, guarding nests and so on. After pairing, if one is lost or dies, the other will take a long time to find a new mate.

Pigeons are late adults.

Newly hatched squab (also known as squab), the body is weak, eyes can not be opened, only some newborn fluff, can not walk and look for food. The parent pigeon feeds the suckling pigeon with the pigeon milk in the crop and needs to be fed for a month before the squab can live independently.

Take plant seeds as the staple food

Meat pigeons to corn, rice, wheat, peas, mung beans, sorghum and other staple food, generally do not have the habit of cooked food. Under the condition of artificial feeding, the feed can be made into full-price compound feed according to its nutritional needs, and the pellet feed with a diameter of 3mm to 5mm can be made by using "health care sand" (also known as nutrient mud) as additive and adding some vitamins. Pigeons can adapt and make better use of this feed.

Pigeons are addicted to salt.

The ancestors of pigeons lived by the sea for a long time and often drank sea water, so they formed the habit of being addicted to salt. If the pigeon's diet is short of salt for a long time, it will lead to physiological disorders such as pigeon laying. Each adult pigeon needs 0 or 2 grams of salt every day. Too much salt can also cause poisoning.

Love cleanliness and high habitats

Pigeons do not like to come into contact with feces and dirt, and like to live on perches, windowsills and nests with a certain height. Pigeons like to take a bath very much, especially in hot weather.

Adaptability and alertness

Pigeons are distributed in tropical, subtropical, temperate and cold zones, and can live in ±50 ℃, with strong resistance and strong adaptability to the surrounding environment and living conditions. Pigeons are highly alert. If they are disturbed by natural enemies (eagles, cats, weasels, mice, snakes, etc.), they will panic and try their best to escape from the cage. After escape, they will not want to return to their cage and rest. Any abnormal noise in the pigeon house at night will also lead to panic and riots among the pigeons.

Memory and homing

Pigeons have a strong memory and are particularly good at identifying directions, nesting boxes and young pigeons. even after years of separation, pigeons can tell the direction, fly back to where they are, and identify their mates among the pigeons. Pigeons can also establish a certain conditioned reflex to the breeders who are in frequent contact, especially the strong ability to recognize the sound and tools used by the breeders in each feeding. After a period of time, the pigeons hear this sound. After seeing the feeding tools, they can gather on one side of the eater and wait for food. On the contrary, if the breeder is rude, after a period of time, the pigeons run away as soon as they see the breeder.

Have the habit of controlling his wife

After the pigeon builds the nest, the male pigeon begins to force the female pigeon to lay eggs in the nest, such as the female pigeon leaves the nest, the male pigeon will be desperate to chase, peck the female pigeon to return to the nest, and will not stop until the goal is reached. The strength of this wife-control behavior is closely related to its prolific performance.
