The residents of Taixi Township are dissatisfied with the high profits of Liuqing, but what is sacrificed is the health of the people! Formosa Plastics's Liuqing Oil Refinery, located in Mailiao Township, Yunlin County, has been in operation for just 20 years. Over the years, surrounding residents have found that the cancer rate is rising, and the source of pollution is the black smoke emitted by Liuqing. A study by National Taiwan University confirmed that the cancer rate of residents of Mailiao in the west of Taixi near Liuqing is 1.29 times higher than that of other places, and the proportion of women and elderly people is even higher.

In August 2015, the families of 74 people who suffered from cancer or died of cancer in Taixi Township formed the "Taixi Township six Light pollution injury Joint claim self-help Society" and filed a lawsuit against the damage caused by the six light pollution. 70.17 million yuan was claimed from five companies, including Formosa Plastics Industry, Formosa Plastics Petrochemical, South Asia, Taiwan Chemical, and Mailiao Automobile and Power.

The lawsuit took more than three years, and the court opened again yesterday (31). The issue of determining whether the "six light pollution case is a public hazard" was discussed again, and finally the court of first instance ruled that the case was sent to the Environmental Protection Agency for appraisal. Members of the self-help Association said that the time of the residents was limited and called on the court to decide not to delay any longer.

Huang Yuanghe, president of Taixi Township's six Light pollution injury Joint compensation Association, said that the folk habit of "leaving a breath to go back to the hall" makes it easy for death certificates not to be clearly issued, and there is a gap between the statistics of cancer and death and the actual situation.
