In China, traditional orchid culture matrix is made of mountain mud, bamboo root mud, pond mud or ginseng mixed with a little river sand. In recent years, jue root, bark and pebbles have been used as substrates at home and abroad. The extraction and pretreatment of these substrates are not easy or the proportion is large, and it is inconvenient to carry. According to the growth habits of orchids and inspired by my predecessors, I chose fresh sawdust, which is loose, permeable, water-retaining, light specific gravity, easy to carry and less disease and insect pests, to plant wild Cymbidium, Chunjian and Cymbidium ripe grass. The observation for one year shows that among more than ten kinds of substrates, sawdust can promote orchid root germination and growth most quickly. Planting at the beginning of May can cause explosive rooting about half a month, with high germination rate, fast growth and thicker green leaves. Good glossiness. The method is:

Raise orchid with sawdust

1. Choose a basin or make a pool

Potted cuttings or 6-inch plain pottery pots; the pool is 1.2 meters wide, about 15,000,000 centimeters high and unlimited in length.

2. Preparation

The main results were as follows: (1) the orchid seedlings were divided into 5 seedlings, cut off the dry leaves, disease and insect leaves and empty roots and cut off the roots, soaked and sterilized with 500 ml 800 times carbendazim solution for half an hour, then dried and set aside.

(2) disinfect the sawdust with 0.1% permanganate and disinfect the flowerpot for half an hour.

3. Planting

(1) time: April-May and October-November are the best.

(2) methods:

Potted plant: cover one tile with foam or small tile as filter layer, add a little sawdust, put the orchid seedling into the basin, manage the orchid and root, so that it can stretch naturally, add sawdust to the base of the bulb to fix the orchid seedling, and make the edge 3-5 cm lower than the pot surface, the center and the pot surface flat or slightly lower, showing the shape of steamed bread.

Pond planting: spread sawdust 15 cm thick in the pool, plant at a density of 5 cm by 10 cm, dig out a ditch of 15 cm first, evenly row the orchid seedlings into the ditch, make the base of the bulb flush with the surface, manage the orchid root, and fill the ditch with sawdust.

4. Fertilizer and water management

One month after planting, orchid king and Yemanbao can be fertilized outside the root. after the new root grows, thin water fertilizer is applied every 10 times every 15 days, which is beneficial to the growth of orchid buds and flowering.

When planting to fully wet sawdust, often keep the surface layer 2Mel 3cm sawdust moist, even if the plum rain season, orchid roots will not rot. It is reported that fresh sawdust will burn roots because of fermentation. However, after more than a year of planting, no rotting roots were found in pots or ponds, which may be due to frequent watering, cooling and heat dissipation, and sawdust is not easy to ferment and burn roots.

Because fresh sawdust has the advantages of less diseases and insects, loose ventilation, water conservation, light specific gravity and no fear of plum rain, it is an ideal substrate for orchid cultivation, especially in rainy areas in the south of the Yangtze River.
