The difference between alpinia officinalis and Amomum villosum

Last Updated: 2024/11/25, Leaf blade: the former is lanceolate, with petiole about 1-1.5 cm long. In the latter, the middle leaf is lanceolate, the upper leaf is linear, and there is no petiole. Flowers: the former panicle, below the white top pink. The latter spikes have white petals with a yellow tip in the middle. Fruit: the former is oval while the latter is oval.

The leaves of alpinia officinarum are lanceolate, about 30-60 cm long and 5-10 cm wide, the top is acuminate and has a curly tip, gradually narrowing to the base, margin pubescent, both sides glabrous, petiole about 1-1.5 cm long.

The middle one of Amomum villosum is long-lanceolate, about 37 cm long and 7 cm wide, and the upper one is linear, ca. 25 cm long and 3 cm wide, sessile or subsessile, with sunken reticulation on the leaf sheath.

Second, the difference between flowers

Alpinia officinalis is a panicle, drooping, the petals are white under the petals, the top is pink, the inflorescence axis is purple, the branches are short, there are florets on each branch, and the small bracts are oval.

Amomum villosum is a spike with white petals and a small yellow tip in the middle. Scales elliptic, green or brown, bracts lanceolate, small bracts tubular.

III. Differences between fruits

Alpinia officinalis capsule is oval, with sparse coarse hair on the surface, more striped, and scarlet when mature.

The capsule of Amomum villosum is oval, purplish red after maturity, brown after drying, and spiny on the surface.
