The cultivation experiment of organic taro is successful! Shi Houzhong, a farmer in Ji'an, Hualien, cooperated with the Hualien District Agricultural improvement Farm (Hualian improvement Farm for short). Last year, he experimented with planting organic water taro. By adjusting the timing and use of organic fertilizers and control materials, not only the situation of diseases and insect pests was reduced, but also the plants were healthier than those in the habitual fields. The output per unit of land this year has reached 1600 jin. According to the market price of 120 to 130 yuan per unit, the annual output value can reach 200000 yuan.

Ni Lifeng, an assistant researcher in the crop Environment Section of Hua Gaochang, said that organic fertilizers must be precise, and the customary agricultural method uses quick-acting chemical fertilizers. In paddy fields, the fertilizer efficiency is greatly reduced because of runoff, leaching, and denitrification. Farmers replenish fertilizer frequently, using an average of 1100 to 1400 kilograms of nitrogen per hectare, double the recommended amount of 700kg. "Farmers are used to growing big seeds, but they become fat, but on the contrary, diseases and insect pests are more difficult to control."

Ni Lifeng pointed out that the nutrient release rate of organic materials is slower than that of chemical fertilizers, and the fertilizer effect is longer, and it can give full play to its advantages with medium-and long-term crops of taro. Farmers properly manage the moisture in the fields to reduce fertilizer loss. 500 to 600 kg of organic nitrogen per hectare is enough to supply nutrients for the growth of taro.
